How custom bags are decorated: screen print, DTF, sublimation & patches

A few methods cover bags. Screen printing is the most economical way to put a simple, one- or two-color logo on a bulk run, and it sits cleanly on flat canvas and poly panels. DTF (direct-to-film) presses full-color, detailed art onto most bag fabrics with no minimum. On light-colored 100% polyester bags — poly totes and drawstring bags especially — dye-sublimation dyes an all-over, edge-to-edge design right into the fabric so it never cracks or peels. And a heat-applied leather, faux-leather, or woven patch adds a premium, dimensional branded label — a stitch-free finish that suits totes, duffels, and backpacks. The wrinkle bags add: gusseted panels, textured canvas, and coated or insulated cooler surfaces all affect how ink lays down, so we match the method to the bag.

Screen printing lays durable, opaque ink and is the most economical route for a bold one- or two-color logo across a big run — best per-piece pricing starts around 24 pieces. It's happiest on the flat canvas and poly front panels of totes, drawstrings, and duffels.

DTF (direct-to-film) prints full color with no minimum and presses cleanly onto most bag fabrics — the easy call for a single custom bag, a small group, or photo-real artwork with lots of detail.

Dye-sublimation turns dye into a gas that bonds inside the polyester fiber, so an all-over design becomes part of the bag and never cracks, peels, or fades. It only works on light-colored 100% polyester — not cotton canvas or dark bags — so it's the pick for a full-coverage print on a poly tote or drawstring bag rather than a logo on a canvas tote.

You'll also hear about direct-to-garment (DTG), which sprays ink into a flat cotton garment laid on a platen — a bag's straps, gussets, and structure won't lie flat for it. We don't run DTG anyway; for full-color detail on bags we use DTF, which needs no minimum and bonds to canvas and poly alike, and we reach for screen printing on bulk one- or two-color runs. Print placement & sizing on a bag

Bags print on the front panel, not the chest. Center your main logo on the front panel — about 9 to 11 inches wide on a standard tote — and keep the art clear of the straps, side seams, zippers, and gussets, which distort a print or crop it at the edges. Drawstring bags are the exception: print upper-center, above the cord channel, so the drawcord doesn't run through your logo. And coated or insulated cooler panels affect how ink cures, so we check those before printing.
