Custom Polo Shirts · Complete Guide

The complete guide to custom polo shirts.

A custom polo shirt is a collared knit shirt decorated with your logo — the standard for staff uniforms, golf and corporate events, and service teams because it reads a step more professional than a tee while staying comfortable all day. This guide covers the knit, the decoration method, placement, and fit so you can spec the right polo the first time.

Why custom polos work

A custom polo is the workhorse of branded apparel: it looks polished enough for a front desk or a client meeting, yet it's comfortable enough to wear all shift. A collar and a clean left-chest logo turn any group into a uniform, and a good knit holds its shape and color wash after wash — so your brand keeps looking sharp everywhere it's worn.

Three decisions shape the result: the knit and weight, the decoration method, and the fit. Get those right and you have a polo that looks intentional and lasts. The sections below walk through each, and every order is decorated in-house here in Coatesville, PA.

Polo fabric & knit: piqué vs. jersey vs. performance

The knit matters as much as the fiber. Piqué is the classic structured polo fabric; jersey is softer and more casual; performance knits add moisture-wicking for active wear. Weight — measured in GSM, grams per square meter — drives how substantial and durable the shirt feels.

  • Piqué is a double-knit with a subtle waffle texture and tiny air pockets. It holds its shape, hides minor marks, and resists pilling — a standard piqué polo runs about 220–250 GSM.
  • Jersey is a smooth single-knit that feels like a premium t-shirt, with 15–25% stretch and a lighter 150–200 GSM. It drapes and layers well but pills faster, and collars can curl over time.
  • Performance piqué is a polyester or poly-blend knit engineered to wick sweat and hold color — the pick for anyone active or outdoors.
  • Snag-resistant knits shrug off pulls and hooks for warehouse, field, and service crews.

A lightweight performance knit can actually feel cooler than a heavier cotton piqué — so weigh GSM alongside construction, not in isolation. Prefer the classic textured look? Browse piqué polos; for sweat management, see performance polos.

How custom polos are decorated: screen print vs. DTF vs. dye-sublimation

Two methods cover almost every polo order: screen printing for bulk runs of a simple logo, and DTF for full-color or performance fabrics. Dye-sublimation is a specialist option for all-over prints on light polyester. On performance polos, the fabric often decides the method.

Screen printing lays durable, opaque ink and is the most economical route for a bold left-chest logo across a big roster — best per-piece pricing starts around 24 pieces. The catch: on high-polyester performance fabrics, the fabric dye can bleed into the ink during curing, an effect called dye migration that causes color shift or ghosting.

DTF (direct-to-film) prints full color with no minimum and bonds cleanly to slick synthetic fibers. Because it isn't subject to dye migration, it's the safe, vivid choice for moisture-wicking performance polos — typically holding 50–60 washes with less cracking than screen print on synthetics.

Dye-sublimation turns dye into a gas that penetrates and permanently bonds inside polyester fiber, with no surface layer to crack or peel. It's for all-over designs and needs a light-colored fabric that is at least 65% polyester — it will not bond to cotton.

You'll also hear about direct-to-garment (DTG), which sprays ink into cotton fibers — it's built for high-cotton tees and doesn't suit the polyester knits most polos use. We don't run DTG; for the same full-color look on a polo we use DTF, which bonds to both cotton blends and piqué. Not sure which method fits? Send us your design and quantity and we'll recommend the best one.

Where each method meets the fabric: screen print sits on the surface, DTF bonds a film to it, and dye-sublimation dyes the polyester fiber itself.

Logo placement & sizing

The standard polo logo is a left-chest mark about 3.5 inches wide, placed roughly 8 inches down from the shoulder seam and 4 inches from the placket. That's the sweet spot — visible without overwhelming the shirt.

  • Men's S–L: about 8 in down, 4 in from the placket. XL–2XL: about 9 in down, 4.5 in from the placket.
  • Women's: position about 1 in higher to suit the cut.
  • Youth: scale the logo to roughly 2–3.5 in wide.
  • Other placements: sleeve, center-back yoke, or nape for a second mark.

Choosing the right polo for your use case

Match the blank to the setting. Staff and front-desk uniforms favor a structured piqué that stays crisp; golf and outdoor events want a moisture-wicking performance knit; hospitality and service crews benefit from snag resistance and easy care; casual brand merch leans to a soft jersey.

Pick by fabric

Cotton-blend jersey polos are the budget workhorse for staff shirts and events, like the Gildan 8800 DryBlend Jersey Polo. The CORE365 88181 Origin Performance Polo is a reliable mid-tier performance piqué; for a premium, retail-soft hand feel, look at the Devon & Jones CrownLux Performance Polo. For rough environments, a snag-protection knit like the Harriton Advantage shrugs off pulls and hooks.

Pick by style & fit

Golf polos like the Adidas A430 Performance Piqué Polo are built for the course and events, while long sleeve polos cover cooler days and more formal uniforms. Need generous length? Check tall polos. We stock men's, women's, unisex, and kids' fits so a whole team can share one design in the right cut.

Ordering, turnaround & cost

Pricing depends on the blank, quantity, and method — larger orders lower the per-piece cost, and setup is always included, with no surprise fees. Standard turnaround is about 6 business days, and many items ship in 1–2 days; rush service is often available.

You can also supply your own blanks — just check compatibility with your chosen method first, since performance knits usually print best with DTF. Request a free quote for exact numbers on your design and quantity.

FAQ

Custom polo FAQs

Is there a minimum order for custom polos?

It depends on the method. With DTF you can print a single polo, while screen printing usually starts around 24 pieces for the best per-piece price. Tell us your quantity and we'll steer you to the right approach.

Which polo fabric should I choose?

For low-cost staff and event shirts, a cotton-blend jersey polo is soft and budget-friendly. If people will be active or sweating, go with a moisture-wicking performance piqué; for a premium retail feel choose a soft performance knit, and for rough environments pick a snag-protection polo.

What's the difference between a performance polo and a piqué polo?

Piqué refers to the classic textured knit, while performance polos add moisture-wicking and shape retention for active wear. Many performance polos are also piqué — the terms overlap, and we're happy to help you sort out which blank fits your use.

Do you have men's, women's, and kids' polo fits?

Yes. We carry men's, women's, unisex, and kids' cuts, plus tall sizing for extra length, so you can outfit a whole team in the right fit from one design.

How much do custom polos cost?

Pricing depends on the blank, quantity, and print method — bulk orders lower the per-piece cost, and setup is included in your quote. Request a free quote and we'll give you exact numbers.

Can I supply my own polos to print on?

Yes, you can bring your own blanks. Just check with us first so we can confirm the fabric works with your chosen method — some performance and coated knits print better with DTF than screen printing.

How fast can I get my custom polos?

Standard turnaround is about 6 business days, and many items ship within 1–2 days. Rush options are often available — just let us know your deadline when you request a quote.

Will my logo crack or fade on a performance polo?

Not with the right method. Performance polyester can cause dye migration under a screen print, so for moisture-wicking polos we use DTF, which bonds to synthetic fibers without migration and typically holds 50–60 washes with minimal cracking. We match the method to the fabric so the print lasts.

Can you sublimate a cotton polo?

No — dye-sublimation only bonds to polyester (it needs a light-colored fabric that's at least 65% polyester), so it won't hold on cotton or low-poly blends. For cotton or blended polos we print with screen printing or DTF instead. Tell us your blank and we'll recommend the right method.
